The Edmonton Oilers enter this season in the same position they held last season, as the second-best team in the NHL. Fingers are crossed across the fanbase that this is the year that the team can finally bring the Cup back to Edmonton. While it will require a team effort to do so, several Oilers skaters are looking to move up in the team’s all-time record books. Here’s how they stand.
This is a big year for three Oilers, who are looking to move up the scoring charts in Oilers history. Leon Draisaitl is just 18 goals away from third all-time. He would pass Oilers legend Glenn Anderson and should do so this year.
Connor McDavid is just behind him in sixth, and with 31 goals, he ties Mark Messier for fifth all-time. This requires a big year for the Oilers captain, but it’s far from impossible.
The other Oiler on the charts is Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who needs just 15 goals to tie and 16 goals to pass former captain Ryan Smyth. This should be doable, assuming he continues to see big minutes again this season.
Zach Hyman is also climbing the charts, but even if he scores 40 this year, he will still be outside of the top-10. He currently sits 16th all-time.
Draisaitl again should be moving up the records this season, this time in assists. With just 12 to tie and 13 to pass, the German forward should pass Jari Kurri for fourth all-time.
Nugent-Hopkins should also move up from seventh to sixth this season, needing just 13 to pass Anderson.
McDavid, meanwhile, is stuck in second, a whopping 365 behind Wayne Gretzky. Probably not beatable this season, but perhaps in time.
Yet again, it’s Draisaitl looking to move up the charts, but it will be trickier to do so than the other two. He needs 79 points to pass Messier for fourth and 88 to pass Kurri for third all-time. McDavid sits second at 1082, just under 600 behind Gretzky.
McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins could both move up the shootout goals record this season, with both sitting at 15. The record is held by Jordan Eberle with 20, and it is very possible McDavid takes this one himself this season.
Funny enough, it’s Darnell Nurse tied for third all-time with Charlie Huddy at 81. Even one goal will give him sole possession of second all-time.
Evan Bouchard, meanwhile, is at 55 and needs 20 to beat Kevin Lowe to secure fourth all-time.
McDavid and Draisaitl have both had nine 20-goal seasons, and one more will tie them for the record held by Messier, Anderson, and Kurri. Kurri and Messier also had their ten in a row, and if both do it this season and next, they will beat that record.
Surprisingly, Stuart Skinner is on track for an Oilers record as well. With seven so far, he sits seventh all-time in career shutouts for the team. If he can tie last season and put up three shutouts this year, he will move up to fourth all-time, passing Devan Dubnyk, Grant Fuhr, and Bill Ranford.
With a healthy year from the team’s top players, this should be a year for the record books. The Edmonton Oilers are in an era that we will talk about for generations, with depth across the lineup and players that will undoubtedly be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. There is a lot to be excited about this season in Edmonton. Hockey is back!
