'Targeted Oiler' Laughs Off Mike Babcock Bully Allegations
USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Connect

The running narrative in Edmonton is that new coach Mike Babcock won’t be hard on the star players. No, the polarizing head coach has a reputation for being harder on depth guys and non-stars, which, if true, theoretically puts someone like Vasily Podkolzin in his crosshairs.

Podkolzin isn’t a star player. He’s also not a plug. He’s a depth guy with the ability to play a useful top-six role and he’s got the ability to score 20 goals in a season. He seems like the perfect target for someone like Babcock, if the allegations are true.

That said, Podkolzin isn’t worried about it.

Coming off a career-high 19 goals and 37 points across all 82 games last season, the forward isn’t shying away from the controversy surrounding Babcock’s hiring. In a translated interview with Russian outlet Sport-Express, the forward addressed Babcock’s history, which includes a controversial stint with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Podkolzin addressed the elephant in the room by laughing it off, particularly the suggestion that Babcock might want to look at their cell phones. “I intentionally left it in the locker room. Now I guess I’ll have to carry it around with me. But seriously, we all just treat it as a joke at this point. It’s already a meme in itself.”

This is clearly not a player worried about the stories involving his new head coach. Instead, Podkolzin said he was looking forward to working with Babcock, calling him “a legend of world hockey” and saying the team needs “a shake-up” after a disappointing first-round exit to the Anaheim Ducks last season. Even if Babcock is demanding, he’s on board with the rest of the leadership group, who say this might be exactly what a talented, underachieving roster needs.

“The most important thing is that he manages the team properly; it’s very possible he can bring something new to the table. We need a shake-up. We really hope Mike will help us.” He added, “It’s possible that he will be tough in certain moments. But that’s what we need. Mike spoke with the team leaders, and I think he has a plan on how to utilize us.”

Podkolzin Was a Fan of Kris Knoblauch

While other Oilers probably felt it was time to move on from former coach Kris Knoblauch, Podkolzin has a soft spot for him. The forward recognized that this coach had led Edmonton to consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances before his dismissal. Podkolzin said he sent Knoblauch a personal thank-you message and called the coaching change “a dual situation and a mix of feelings.”

He understands the decision to change things up. “I really developed under him, and he gave me room to play, so it’s hard for me to evaluate the situation objectively. Time is ticking, and our leaders are in their prime. That is both a curse and an advantage for coaches. The pressure and responsibility for the result are colossal because that’s what a coach gets paid for. I am very grateful to Kris and wrote him a message of thanks after his dismissal. Our team is entering a new phase, and I hope it ends in a victory.”
