The Battle of Alberta works overtime in Penticton

But Edmonton responded back on a power play, with Matt Coronato in the box serving a double-minor for high-sticking. After a nice passing sequence, Brady Stonehouse fired a shot through a little bit of traffic that beat Flames netminder Connor Murphy to tie things up at 1-1.

The second period was fairly even and got a little physical, including when a big crowd formed after Oilers forward Jayden Grubbe cross-checked Flames forward Mark Duarte into the back of Samuel Honzek.

The Flames didn’t get much done on the resulting power play, but afterwards they managed to maintain possession, cycle the puck, and eventually cash in. Duarte held onto the puck behind the net, found a seam to make a pass, and fed Nikolaev in front for the Russian’s second goal of the game to make it 2-1 Flames.

The Oilers evened things up early in the third period on a carry-over power play, though. Matvei Petrov made a nice pass into the slot, which glanced off Carl Berglund’s skate and past Murphy to make it a 2-2 game.

But the Flames responded back midway through the period on a 4-on-3 power play. After a bit of passing, Matt Coronato leaned into a feed from Rory Kerins that beat new Oilers netminder Joey Rocha to make it a 3-2 Flames lead.

The Oilers evened things up (again) on another power play, with Petrov leaning into a feed from Beau Akey and one-timing it under the crossbar past Murphy. That made it a 3-3 hockey game.

This game went to extra time to decide the outcome. Adam Klapka drew a penalty in overtime, and on the resulting man advantage Klapka deflected Etienne Morin’s point shot past Rocha to give the Flames a 4-3 overtime victory.

Why the Flames won

The Flames definitely looked more cohesive than they did against Vancouver on Friday night. Yes, some of that was definitely because Edmonton has a less experienced group in Penticton than Vancouver does. And yes, the Flames kids seemed more familiar with each other after a game together. But the Flames got a lot out of the lineup changes they made, and they got a few good performances that buoyed them.

The team in red was hoping for a bounce-back, and they received one.

But a lot of gents in red had good outings. Among them: Matt Coronato, Adam Klapka, Lucas Ciona, Mark Duarte, Quinn Mantei and Connor Murphy.

This and that

For the second game in a row, Adam Klapka, Rory Kerins and Yan Kuznetsov all wore As as alternate captains for the Flames.

Connor Murphy went the distance in net for the Flames, backed up by Jari Kykkanen. In terms of lineup changes from Friday night’s outing, the Flames swapped in defenders Donovan McCoy and Quinn Mantei and forward Oliver Tulk in, and swapped out defenders Charles Cote and Tyson Galloway and forward Oliver Peer.
