With the 32nd selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames have selected forward Cullen Potter. He had 22 points in 35 games with Arizona State University this season. The Flames had the 32nd overall pick from the Florida Panthers in the Matthew Tkachuk trade.

Who is Cullen Potter?

Potter is yet another great addition to the Flames’ prospect pool. He de-committed from Michigan State University to go to Arizona. He’s said to be one of the strongest skaters in this year’s draft. He can play on the wing and down the middle.

Analyzing the Flames’ choice with Potter

While size has been a critique, Potter makes up for it with his large skill set. He has strengths in skating, puck movement and overall compete level. This player fits the mold the Flames are trying to look for in players when it comes to attitude and drive.

Potter has the tools to easily become a significant NHL player. He currently projects as a top-six forward despite his size at 5’10” being a risk for some scouts.

What’s next for the player?

Potter won’t be NHL ready right away. He’ll need time to develop in Calgary’s system before he can go pro. However, the upside with Potter is massive and his pick is a great end of the first round for the Flames. The Tkachuk trade is also officially complete.
