The Dallas Stars' biggest X-factor in 2025-26 isn't who you think

The Dallas Stars enter 2025-26 chasing another deep playoff run, but their biggest X-factor may not be Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, or Mikko Rantanen, instead, it could be Mavrik Bourque or Thomas Harley who change everything.

Dallas has been to three straight Western Conference Finals, yet has fallen just short each time. Now, with cap pressure tightening and the roster shifting, the difference-maker may not be the franchise cornerstones, but the younger players stepping into bigger roles.

Why Mavrik Bourque and Thomas Harley could be the Stars' true X-factors

Bourque, the former AHL scoring leader, finally has a clear runway to prove himself. Instead of being buried in a fourth-line role, he's expected to slot into a spot where his offensive instincts can shine. Analyst Jeff Marek told DLLS that Bourque is "a bona fide NHLer" who could break out this season.

If he delivers secondary scoring, Dallas gains a weapon that makes their lineup nearly impossible to shut down.

Harley, meanwhile, continues to emerge as one of the Stars' most vital defensemen. After producing 97 points across the last two seasons, his growth at both ends of the ice has been undeniable.

As NHL.com's coverage has emphasized, Harley's ability to step into Miro Heiskanen's role when needed proved that Dallas has more than one elite blueliner in its system.

The Stars already have the core pieces, but the question is whether their younger players can provide the boost that tips the balance.

Personally, I think Bourque's breakout potential is just as important as Harley's consistency, and either one could end up being the hidden key to Dallas's Cup chase.
