With the 131st selection in the 2025 NHL Draft, the Edmonton Oilers have selected Asher Barnett.

Barnett player profile

On the U.S. National U18 Team, Barnett produced 14 points in 49 games, with five goals. He then had six points in 21 games in the USHL. Barnett was also the captain of the national team.

Analyzing the pick

Barnett is a good two-way defenceman who will likely break out next year. He is skilled at skating and excels in his physicality and breakout passes. This is a solid bet for the Oilers to strengthen their prospect pool. Barnett is a safe and stabilizing presence on the blue line and can do a little bit of everything on the ice.

What’s next for Barnett

Barnett will be attending Michigan next year and will be facing NCAA competition. This should be very beneficial for his development and should prepare him well for facing NHL competition in the next couple of years.
