The 2024-25 Calgary Flames season has come and gone.
With the expectations of being towards the bottom of the standings at season’s end, the Flames surprised everyone by missing the post-season on a tie-breaker, despite finishing the season with 96 points.
There were ups and downs in the season, as well as plenty of beautiful goals. Let’s take a look at the fifth-best goal from the most recent season.
Entering Mar. 12, the Flames were barely clinging on to the final wild card in the Western Conference with 70 points. They welcomed the Vancouver Canucks, the team just one point behind them for the wild card spot.
About seven and a half minutes into the game, the Canucks opened the scoring in the pivotal game. That only lasted for about four and a half minutes, as Nazem Kadri scored the fifth-best goal of the season.
Rasmus Andersson sprung Kadri, who was sneaking behind the Canucks’ defence, for a breakaway. He faked a shot, which the Canucks’ netminder bit on, and pulled it to his backhand. The netminder attempted to stick out his pad, but Kadri moved laterally and deposited into the back of the net for his 23rd goal of the season.

In the grand scheme of things, this goal didn’t really matter. The two teams were tied heading into the second period, with the Canucks taking a 2-1 lead midway through the period before the Flames scored a shorthanded goal and power play goal to take a 3-2 lead into the third. Elias Pettersson tied the game with under seven minutes left before the Canucks took it in the shootout.
The Canucks eventually fizzled out of the post-season race, but the St. Louis Blues got incredibly hot, and the Minnesota Wild were barely able to hang on. This game was one of many games where the Flames lost in overtime or a shootout, finishing with 14 in total. If they were able to flip just one of those games, the Flames would’ve been a playoff team in 2024-25.
Still, it was one of many nice goals Kadri was able to score this past season. Another one was scored against the Florida Panthers, stripping the puck and walking in on a breakaway. Other honourable mentions for top goals include all three of Justin Kirkland’s shootout goals, as well as Morgan Frost’s first goal as a Flame.
