The Minnesota Wild Tried to Reunite the Hughes Brothers

The Minnesota Wild stepping in to acquire Quinn Hughes in December came out of left field, but after spending a majority of the season in the State of Hockey, it appears the superstar defenseman is interested in sticking around.

He said as much on Friday, which now puts a wrench in plans to eventually team up with brothers Jack and Luke Hughes—unless, of course, they find a way to join him in Minnesota. While that would be difficult to pull off this offseason, a recent report from Michael Russo suggests GM Bill Guerin has already been doing work in an attempt to make both of them members of the Wild.

Russo wrote:

“Everybody knows the Hughes brothers want to play together. Maybe Jack wants to come to Minnesota now to join forces with Quinn rather than wait or have it the other way around. It would be complicated, though, because it’s hard to believe Jack would leave their youngest brother, Luke, behind with the New Jersey Devils. That may be why, per league sources, the Wild made a pitch to former Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald to acquire Luke this past season,”

The 26-year-old Quinn will be entering the sixth and final year of the six-year, $47.1 million extension he signed with the Canucks back in 2021 and will be eligible for an extension on July 1. Meanwhile, Luke, 23, has another six years remaining on the seven-year, $63 million deal he signed to stay with the Devils in October.

It always felt inevitable that the Hughes brothers would wind up on the same team at some point, but given how much Quinn has enjoyed his time in Minnesota, the chances of that happening in New Jersey may have gotten much smaller.

New GM Sunny Mehta isn’t just going to trade Jack and Luke to the Wild to make them happy, but their long-term futures could certainly depend on whether the Devils are able to turn things around after a difficult 2025-26 season.
