The Oilers’ goaltending woes continue

The Edmonton Oilers dropped their first game of the 2025-26 regular season on Wednesday night, blowing a 3-0 lead and losing 4-3 in a shootout to their provincial rival, the Calgary Flames.

Oilers’ goaltender Stuart Skinner struggled in net, allowing three goals on just 22 shots, then giving up two in the shootout to hand the Flames the victory.

On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE , Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discuss the Oilers’ loss and where Skinner stands with the team and its fanbase.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Pitchforks were out in Edmonton for Stuart Skinner, what would you say to a fanbase that is, once again, frustrated with their goaltending?

Carter Hutton : I think I have to stand with them – it’s just disappointing when you look at the way that game is going, how they had full control, and I’m not going to knock Skinner on a few of them, but that third-period goal to start for Blake Coleman, it’s a simple play where he dumps the puck on the net and it gets lost in his legs and Skinner has no idea where it is.

For me, I wonder how long the leash is for him. With everything that’s going on, you think about how the team feels when they walk back into that room. Again, it was a game they could have easily won but they end up losing in a shootout. Again, another brutal goal that’s a backbreaker, that just can’t happen.

I know it’s just one game, and I don’t want to be the overreactor, but Skinner hasn’t given us a reason not to overreact.
