The Penguins in free fall since Stuart Skinner’s arrival

The Penguins’ plan has always been to rebuild. That much is clear.

Even though they had a decent start to the season (especially under the circumstances), Kyle Dubas chose to break a winning formula by trading Tristan Jarry to the Oilers.

Stuart Skinner is the chunk that made his way to Pennsylvania.

Skinner and Jarry aren’t the most consistent players. However, the recipe was working for the Penguins, as the club was in the playoffs on the day of the transaction.

The club had 35 points in 29 games, good for a points percentage of .603.

But since then, it’s been a different story. Now we’re talking 39 points in 36 games… which means only four points in seven games.

That’s a rate of .285 since the trade. That’s a 1-4-2 record… and it puts the Penguins just three points off the bottom of the East.

I know, I know: many clubs are close to the bottom of the standings because it’s so tight in the East. But it’s understandable that the drop has been significant and drastic for nearly two weeks now.

And if you think the players aren’t affected by the departure of their trusted goalkeeper, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

The Penguins fans’ new goalie (Kristopher Letang makes it sound like it’s HIS goalie, not the fans’, though) still hasn’t won a game (0-3-0) since switching clubs. His 4.18 average and .831 save percentage are poor.

Unfortunately, his highlight was watching Leon Draisaitl’s 1000th point as the goalie who gave away the point. The last few weeks have undoubtedly been difficult for Skinner, and hopefully the holiday break will do him some good.

Sergei Murashov (overtime loss) and Arturs Silovs (1-1-1) are the other goalies used by the Penguins since the deal, for those wondering.

Tristan Jarry has three wins in as many games in Alberta… and I find it hard to believe that this is good news for Sidney Crosby, whose trade rumors refuse to die.
