The Vancouver Canucks get a shocking surprise and bring Brock Boeser back on a seven-year deal

The Vancouver Canucks started off free agency with a bang, bringing back forward Brock Boeser on a 7-year, 7.25M AAV deal. Dan Murphy was first to post the news, and it was later confirmed by the team:

The relationship between the Canucks and Boeser had seemed to be coming to an end

This was a shocking development, given the talk was Boeser was leaving the Canucks. After an eventful trade deadline in March where the Canucks were actively shopping Boeser, it seemed like the relationship had soured. Canucks GM Patrick Allvin was quoted as saying the following:

Boeser was even quoted as saying the following:

Whatever changed since then, I’m sure both sides are happy to get that deal done today. Boeser is an important Canuck and sends a larger message during a time where the organization is facing some questions.

Looking at the Canucks now

With the tables turned and Boeser now locked up, the Canucks roster looks pretty set. They have under 600K in cap space remaining, assuming Jonathan Lekkerimaki and Victor Mancini are on the opening roster. The problem with the Canucks remains up the middle of the ice now. With it being extremely likely that Pius Suter re-signs given the lack of cap space, the Canucks are left with Pettersson, Chytil, Blueger, and Aman/Raty down the middle. Maybe the Canucks look to move out a winger to create cap space for a centre? I look at a guy like Nils Hoglander, who is making 3M for the next three seasons, as a guy they might move for cap space.
