The Boston Bruins announced what should be a final round of cuts on Sunday, and goaltending prospect Michael DiPietro was one of the players placed on waivers. The Bruins are taking a chance at losing the 26-year-old after a stellar season in Providence in the American Hockey League.
Dipietro was one of three goaltenders who were all put on waivers at the same time around the league, but James Mirtle said, “The Maple Leafs and Flames have shown interest before, and the Hurricanes are monitoring closely.”
Toronto is without backup Joseph Woll due to injury currently, and appears to be going with Dennis Hildeby as the backup. Both Woll and starter Anthony Stolarz have been injury-prone. DiPietro appears to NHL-ready, although his preseason performance was somewhat underwhelming. DiPietro could not beat out backup Joonas Korpisalo for the backup job in Boston. The Maple Leafs would sure up their goalie depth, but would have to keep DiPietro on the NHL roster.
The Flames have Dustin Wolf as the clear starter, Ivan Prosvetov was signed for this season, and Devin Cooley is also in the organization. DiPietro again would have to be added to the NHL roster, and that would seem like a long shot over the other netminders.
The Hurricanes have shown interest in the past, but appear to be set in goal with three NHL netminders. However, the Canes could claim DiPietro in case of injury.
If DiPietro is claimed, the Bruins will be left with goalies Simon Zajicek and Luke Cavallin.
