It was early in the 1997 season when the Mark Messier era in Vancouver had officially kicked off. He was certainly underwhelming out of the gate – and the rest of his tenure. However, in his first game against his former team, Messier evened up the game in the second period.
Unfortunately for the Canucks, they would allow four second period goals, and walk into the second break down 5-2. The third period was when the fireworks came.
The final frame had a trio of bouts. Eric Cairns and Donald Brashear kicked off the fighting at the 8:14 mark, followed by Gino Odjick and Darren Langdon at the 13:11 mark. Then, to finish off the game, Walker and Keane dropped the gloves.
Walker and Keane shed their mitts at centre ice and began throwing punches in front of the New York Rangers’ bench. The two fighters had their hands pretty tied up, but were still able to land half-powered punches on each other. One of those fights where both players had their heads down and were blindly swinging, hoping to connect.
It was the Canucks defenceman who got the first full-blow on Keane, which ultimately knocked him off balance. This led to Walker being in an unfortunate position, as Keane landed numerous punches on the defenceless Walker.
After finding his footing, Walker was back in the fight. However, Keane took that opportunity to repeatedly connect to Walker’s chin. The two slowed down before re-engaging, when Walker started to make up some ground on Keane, connecting with upper-cuts and right hands.
The two were relentless against one another until they tired themselves out, and the refs broke up the fight — one of the more even fights we’ve had so far in this series.
HockeyFights voters gave this fight a 9.2/10 and favoured the draw, which earned 56% of the 146 votes. Keane received 35% of the votes, with Walker grabbing just 9%.
