It was another quiet Friday night in the National Hockey League yesterday, with only five games on the schedule.

However, despite the small number of games, there were plenty of goals in all of them.

Here’s a rundown of the evening’s highlights.

1. Nikolaj Ehlers and the Hurricanes have fun against the Panthers

The Florida Panthers, fighting to stay in the playoff picture, were in Raleigh last night to take on the Metropolitan Division’s top-ranked Carolina Hurricanes.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, it wasn’t their night, as they were absolutely picked off by the Canes.

Carolina humiliated Florida 9-1, with Nikolaj Ehlers scoring a hat trick.

It really is a huge beating, and it’s worth noting that Sergei Bobrovsky stayed in front of the net throughout the game without ever being pulled by the Panthers.

In short, it’s a result that benefits the Canadiens, who are trying to maintain their place in the top-3 of their division, and especially their playoff spot.

2. Predators surprise the Avalanche

If there’s one team above all others this season, it’s the Colorado Avalanche.

Regular losses, especially at home, have been extremely rare for the Colorado Avalanche so far this season.

Last night, however, the Avalanche were stunned by the Nashville Predators.

The Preds were visiting Colorado, and were therefore expecting a very tough game, and probably a loss, but in the end, they came away with a 7-3 victory.

Nashville, who are having an ordinary season but now find themselves one point away from the playoffs, surprised the Avalanche with a big performance.

Juuse Saros was very good, turning away 39 of 42 shots, while Ryan O’Reilly scored a hat trick.

In short, a very big win for the Preds.

3. First loss in 11 games for the Lightning

After ten consecutive wins, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s winning streak came to an end last night, as they lost 3-2 in a shootout to the St. Louis Blues.

The Lightning remain first in the Atlantic Division and first in the Eastern Conference, with a three-point lead over the Canadiens, and two games in hand.

4. Red Wings defeat Sharks

Another of the Habs’ direct rivals was in action last night.

The Red Wings, who beat the Habs 4-0 last Saturday at the Bell Centre, are trying to hold on to second place in the division ahead of the Canadiens.

And last night, they did just that with a 4-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

The Wings are now three points ahead of the Canadiens, but with one more game to play.

5. A first NHL goal for Tim Washe

The Anaheim Ducks were in Los Angeles last night to take on the Kings, and won 3-2 in a shootout.

In this victory, a certain Tim Washe, never drafted in the NHL, scored his first career league goal, in only his sixth game.

Washe is a 6-foot-3, 24-year-old forward from Detroit, Michigan.

This is a great accomplishment for him, and it’s always really nice to see a guy who’s never been drafted make it to the NHL and score a goal.

They’re always great stories.
