For the first time since 2016, the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the clock with the first overall pick. The kicker? The last time the Maple Leafs missed the playoffs was in 2016. By jumping from fifth to first in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery, the Leafs not only secured a franchise-altering talent, but they have also narrowly avoided a massive scouting nightmare.
The Choice: McKenna vs. Stenberg
The newly formed front office led by GM John Chayka and advisor Mats Sundin, faces the age-old “ceiling vs. floor” debate.
So, let’s look into their options. Gavin McKenna (LW, Penn State), the consensus top North American skater is a creative offensive driver. His transition from the WHL to the NCAA didn’t slow him down, as he racked up an impressive 51 points (15 G) in 35 games. McKenna offers elite playmaking and a flair for showmanship that would fit seamlessly on a wing next to Auston Matthews (drama pending).
Next, they have Ivar Stenberg (RW, Frölunda), the Swedish sensation. Stenberg is the “pro-ready” alternative. Playing against men in the SHL, Stenberg logging 33 points (11G) in 43 games, the most by an 18-year-old since the Sedin twin prodigies. He brings a high-motor, two-way game and physical maturity that could bring a much needed change to the culture in Toronto, and earn him a spot as early as October.
The “Carlo” Escape and Future Costs
Winning the lottery wasn’t just good news for Toronto, it was a necessity. The 2026 first-round pick sent to Boston in the Brandon Carlo trade carried a top 5 protection. By moving to #1, Toronto retained the pick. Despite the celebration, the bill is still due. The chickens have yet to come home to roost.
Since the protection was triggered, Toronto must now navigate the complex web of future obligations. Boston will now likely receive the Leafs’ 2027 unprotected first-round pick. This creates a, well, precarious situation, as the Leafs also have conditions tied to the Scott Laughton trade with Philadelphia. Chayka will need to manage the 2027 and 28’ draft cycles carefully to ensure the team isn’t left without a quality pick for consecutive years.
For now, the focus is on Buffalo and Matthews. Whether they take the flashy McKenna or the reliable Stenberg, the Leafs have just been handed the ultimate “get out of jail free” card. Will this cause the Captain to stay or go now? The clash of opinions and routes, all we have to do is wait.
