Huge news this morning as the Edmonton Oilers have traded goaltender and hometown kid Stuart Skinner to the Pittsburgh Penguins for goaltender Tristan Jarry.
The Penguins did not retain any of Jarry’s salary in the trade.
Pending UFA defenceman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick are also heading to Pittsburgh in the deal, with forward Samuel Poulin also heading to Edmonton. This is to even out the salary cap math as a dollar in, dollar out move.

The Oilers have had serious struggles in the crease for a few seasons now, and despite the fact that Skinner was a beloved player and an Edmonton-born guy, he simply did not hold down the fort well enough.
There is a good argument to be made that the Oilers would have at least one more Stanley Cup banner if they had a better goalie than Skinner the past three seasons.
Skinner spent parts of six seasons with the Oilers, putting up career totals of a 2.74 GAA and .904 SV%. This season he leaves the Oilers with a record of 11-8-4, 2.83 GAA, and .891 SV%
Now, former Edmonton Oil King Jarry will tend the crease for the Oilers in their bid to capture the Cup. With a 9-3-1 record, 2.66 GAA, and .909 SV% this season. The 29-year-old will enter a tough environment with the highest of aspirations; let’s see how he does.
The Oilers needed a goaltending shakeup, but their preference was reported to be having Skinner and Jarry as a tandem. Unfortunately, they will still have Calvin Pickard as the backup who, while isn’t a terrible goalie, doesn’t bring the same things that Skinner does.
Hopefully Jarry is up to the task. Best of luck to Skinner in Pittsburgh and a huge thank you to him for his dedication to the Oilers over his tenure with the team. He will be missed, but hopefully this move pushes the team forward.
