The Calgary Flames’ season may have ended weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean some of their top prospects are done for the summer. After the completion of the WHL and QMJHL playoffs, we now know that two of the Flames’ top prospects will be competing at junior hockey’s biggest tournament, the Memorial Cup.
With all the talk of just how great the Flames’ 2024 draft class has looked this season, I think a lot of people forgot about perhaps one of the team’s most exciting prospects in Andrew Basha.
Selected with the Flames’ second-round pick in 2024 and their third overall selection in the draft, Basha suffered a serious ankle injury early into his D+1 season. The injury left him out of the lineup for nearly six months.
He made his triumphant return on just about the biggest stage, stepping back into the lineup in the WHL final. His loaded Medicine Hat Tigers would dominate en route to a 4–1 series win. Basha played a key role, stepping right into the team’s top-six and posting six points in five games.
With such a stacked roster—including 2026 phenom Gavin McKenna—it’ll be fun to watch Basha go for the Memorial Cup.
Across the country, another more under-the-radar Flames prospect will also be competing for the Memorial Cup this year. A 2023 second-rounder, Etienne Morin helped guide his Moncton Wildcats to not only the QMJHL final and an automatic Memorial Cup berth, but a QMJHL championship as well.
The 20-year-old defenceman has been a staple on the Wildcats’ top pairing for three straight seasons now and will finally get a chance at the Memorial Cup. Morin is the pillar of his team’s defence. He led all Wildcats defenders in scoring in both the regular season and playoffs while playing over 20 minutes a night.
In fact, his 20 points in 19 playoff games led the entire QMJHL in scoring from the blue line. He may not get the recognition or hype some other prospects do, but Morin is without a doubt the best left-handed defence prospect in the organization, and it’ll be great to watch him against junior hockey’s top talent.
The 2025 Memorial Cup is slated to kick off on May 22, with the final taking place on June 1. Here’s the full schedule and when each Flames prospect will be playing. One game in particular to watch out for is the May 26 showdown between Basha’s Tigers and Morin’s Wildcats.
