Vancouver Canucks get Caught Violating New Provincial Law After Being Reported by Fans

The Canucks have been listing job postings for eager fans to join the team, however, they have failed to include the expected pay which is breaking the new law.

Working for the Vancouver Canucks is a dream for many fans. While most are not given the opportunity to play for the team, roles within Service, Sales, Marketing, and Administration offer alternative ways to become part of the team.

The Canucks always have several career opportunities listed on their recruitment website, with 13 positions currently available. However, each of these listings appears to be in violation of a provincial law.

Take, for instance, the 'Director, Social Media & Content' job. The advertisement gives thorough responsibilities and prerequisites, such as a marketing degree and eight years of experience. What is not mentioned is compensation information.

The omission is in contravention of B.C.'s 'Pay Transparency Act', which became law on May 11, 2023. The law requires employers to include the expected pay or salary range in all publicly advertised jobs.

The Canucks are not exempt from this law despite being a sports team

B.C.'s Ministry of Finance confirmed the Canucks are not exempt and that their job postings must include this information. For now, the team will just get a reminder, as the Act has no formal penalties as of yet.

'Job postings from this employer are subject to B.C.'s Pay Transparency Act,' they said. 'The Ministry of Finance's Gender Equity Office (GEO) has reached out to this employer regarding its job posting practices and to remind them of their obligations under the Act.'

'Currently, there are no administrative penalties under the Pay Transparency Act,' said the Ministry of Finance. 'The Province takes an educational approach with employers.'

The Ministry also said their education strategy is working, as 85% of B.C. job postings now include pay information. They also encourage the public to report postings that are not compliant.

The purpose of the 'Pay Transparency Act' is to combat wage discrimination by making pay information visible, a step the Ministry says is a win-win for both employers and job candidates.

The Canucks have not issued a statement on the situation at this time.
