Vancouver Canucks Prospect Defenseman Makes Bold Prediction Ahead of Rookie Pro Season

Sawyer Mynio has a bright future ahead in hockey, and now the former third-round pick has declared he wants to make the jump to the pro level this season.

Back in 2023, the Vancouver Canucks landed defenseman Sawyer Mynio from Kamloops, British Colombia in the third-round, giving them another exciting blue line prospect.

Last year, Mynio split time in the WHL between the Seattle Thunderbirds and Calgary Hitmen, tallying an impressive 14 goals and 45 points in that time, with the 6-foot-1 blue liner showing plenty of promise for the future.

Mynio aims to make the jump to professional hockey in 2025/26

However, the talented prospect has no intentions of returning to the WHL this season, as the 20-year old has revealed his goal to play his first full season at the professional level in 2025/26.

'Abbotsford [Canucks in the AHL] is the place to start and just work my way up from there.

Hopefully, play some NHL games this year and if not it's something to work toward for the year after that.'

This past season, Mynio showed that he's capable at both ends of the ice, and with the Canucks wanting to inject young talent into their lineup, it's highly likely that he'll be given the opportunity to prove himself on the highest level.

As of right now, it's unclear what the organizations plan is with Mynio, but they know they have a potential star on their hands, so now the 2025/26 season will be crucial in his development, making their decision on him a vital one.

Ultimately, the Canucks are a team looking to bounce back into Stanley Cup Playoffs contention this season, so perhaps they may not have as much room for a young guy like Mynio, but after winning the Calder Cup in the AHL a season ago, landing him in that competitive environment may be the way to go. Only time will tell.
