The Vegas Golden Knights landing star forward Mitch Marner in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs was arguably the biggest news of NHL free agency.
The Golden Knights sent center Nic Roy to the Leafs in exchange for the 28-year-old winger, who promptly signed an eight-year $96 million contract extension, ending monthslong speculation about Marner’s future if he left Toronto.
Fresh off a career-high 102 points, Marner was set to become the hottest name on the free-agent market.
The former No. 4 overall pick is one of the best offensive players in the NHL, scoring 20 or more goals in even of his nine NHL seasons, including two 30-goal seasons, and he’s logged 80 or more points in five seasons, including four straight years.
Vegas wasted little time in promoting its new star on social media, and the team made a big announcement about Marner on Tuesday during free agency, announcing fans could now buy his No. 93 jersey in their team store.
“We can get used to this Mitch Marner jerseys are available at The Arsenal now! ⚔️” the Golden Knights announced on X.

Marner is the latest offensive dynamo to join a loaded Golden Knights roster, joining Ivan Barbashev, Jack Eichel, Tomas Hertl, William Karlsson, Pavel Dorofeyev, and Mark Stone.
He’s also the latest in a long line of top stars including Eichel, Hertl, Stone, and defenseman Noah Hanifin that the Golden Knights have acquired via trade.
Marner took to Instagram to post a heartfelt goodbye to Maple Leafs fans shortly after the trade to Vegas became official.
“Leaving isn't easy,” Marner wrote. “This city is where I grew up, where I fell in love with hockey, and where I've had the incredible honour of living out my childhood dream. Wearing the Maple Leaf on my chest wasn't just about playing for a team, it was about representing my home.
“… As I prepare for what comes next, I leave a different person than I was at 18. I'll always be grateful for my time here, and most of all, I'm so proud to have been a Toronto Maple Leaf.”
