The Vegas Golden Knights have been making plenty of moves early in the off-season, and now they've added a very intriguing defenseman from the Winnipeg Jets.
Early in the off-season, the Vegas Golden Knights have made the huge splash of a sign-and-trade for Mitch Marner, extending the former Maple Leafs star eight-years on a value of $12 million per season.
On top of that, the team have been aggressive in pursuing Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson, and while they haven't yet got him, they've added a blue liner on day one of free agency.
According to a report, the team have landed 27-year old Dylan Coghlan on a one-year deal carrying a salary cap hit of $775,000, adding to what will likely be a fairly deep blue line when the 2025/26 season begins.
The former un-drafted defenseman has played in 112 games at the NHL level so far, and in 2024/25 with the Jets, he spent most of his time in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose, tallying 12 goals and 28 points in 36 games played.
In his 112 NHL games, Coghlan has put up just 6 goals and 22 points, but has yet to get the chance to be a full-time NHLer with a defined role, and perhaps with the injury report to Alex Pietrangelo, this may be the season that he finally gets that shot.
It's an under the radar move that will likely go overlooked by the rest of the NHL, but this is a solid, low-risk signing for the Golden Knights, and even if he remains their 7th defenseman or even plays in the AHL this season, the chance that he steps up and finally fulfils his potential was too good to pass up for the Golden Knights.
