Miles Wood’s call-up gives the Toronto Maple Leafs a little more than a warm body to fill out the lineup. With John Tavares away for the birth of his son, Wood is expected to join Toronto ahead of Saturday’s game in Colorado. Whether he gets into the lineup is still a separate question. But he’s got a chance to show the team what he can bring.
Wood’s first contribution is energy. He’s a fast, physical winger who likes to get in on the forecheck and make life uncomfortable for the other team. That’s a useful change of pace for a group that can sometimes use a bit more push in the bottom six.
He’s not being called up to replace Tavares’ offence, of course. Toronto has other options to move up the lineup, and Nick Paul took reps in Tavares’ spot at practice. Wood’s more likely to help by keeping the fourth line moving, finishing checks and giving the team another forward who can play with some edge.
The move also has a practical side. Wood has played 567 NHL games and has 196 points, so the Maple Leafs don’t need to introduce him slowly. He knows what an NHL shift feels like. Last season, he had eight goals and six assists in 54 games with Columbus. That’s not big-time scoring, but it’s enough to suggest he can chip in when the chances are there.
The question is what happens after Tavares returns. Wood has a $2.5-million cap hit and three seasons left on his contract. So this isn’t just a quick look at a player on a minimum deal. Toronto will have to decide whether he can earn a regular role. Or is better viewed as a roster option who might be moved later.
It’s tempting to treat every call-up as a trade audition, but there’s no proof that’s why the Maple Leafs brought him up. The immediate reason is clear: Tavares is out, and Toronto needs another forward available. If Wood plays well, that’s a bonus. He could make the team a little harder to play against—and give the coaching staff another useful option when the lineup gets shuffled.
For now, the bar doesn’t have to be complicated. Bring the pace, play hard, get to the net and make the most of whatever minutes he gets. If Wood can do that, this call-up will have served its purpose, whether it turns into a longer stay or not.
