When Corey Perry signed with the Edmonton Oilers, fans weren’t quite sure what to expect. He was 38. He’d been bought out in Chicago. He came with a reputation—not always a flattering one.
But a funny thing happens when hockey’s most annoying players end up on your team. You stop booing. You start cheering. And if you’re paying attention, you realize: they bring something most teams don’t have.
Call it snarl. Call it edge. Or, call it playoff gravity. Perry had it in spades.
He didn’t just fill minutes—he shaped moments. A greasy goal in front of the net. A penalty drawn at the perfect time. A stare-down in the crease. Every team that goes on a deep playoff run needs one or two of these guys. Not stars. Not role players. Something in between—veterans who know the road and aren’t afraid to scrape their way through the potholes.
You don’t measure these guys by Corsi or expected goals. You measure them by how hard they are to play against. How they change the feel of a series. How they play when it matters most.
That’s why Perry has now appeared in six Stanley Cup Finals with five different teams. It’s not a fluke and it’s not luck. It’s value that shows up when the spotlight is hottest.
The Oilers may have had reasons for letting him walk. Perhaps it was salary cap space. Age. Future planning. Perhaps Perry was seeking a chance to return to California where he began his career with the Anaheim Ducks.
Fair enough. But now, he’s a Los Angeles King. And when Edmonton meets Los Angeles again next spring, it won’t be Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl standing in front of Stuart Skinner, chirping and jabbing and tipping pucks.
It’ll be Corey Perry.
In black and silver.
Still bringing the edge.
There aren’t many players like Perry around who bring such an edge to the team. How much will the Oilers miss him next season? How much will the Kings benefit from his presence? We might see next season in both teams’ run for the Cup.
