Ever since the Ottawa Senators were swept in the first round by the Carolina Hurricanes, the conversation surrounding the team has been about captain Brady Tkachuk, and more importantly, what his future with the team will be. He had a disappointing performance in the playoffs, and after what his brother Matthew did with the Calgary Flames to get dealt to the Florida Panthers and the success he’s had since, who’s to say Brady doesn’t want to do the same.
So what does Tkachuk’s future with the Senators look like? David Pagnotta joined Daily Faceoff Live to talk about the rumours surrounding Tkachuk, and how there might be more to them.
David Pagnotta: I’m certain he’s being honest that he’s been committed to the team and the city. And I’m not confident that he’ll be a Sen next season.
I know Sens fans are shitting all over me and they hate me right now. I get it. He’s your captain. But there’s been a lot of talk around the league that suggests that conversations will happen this summer with the Senators involving Tkachuk. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, and it doesn’t mean he has walked in there and he’s trying to play everybody because he said he wants out. That’s not the case. But there is a strong belief across the league that those conversations will happen.
Will it be enough to convince the Senators to pull the trigger on something? We gotta wait and see. Will it be enough to convince Brady to waive his no-movement clause? We’ll have to wait and see. But the conversations are expected to happen. And when you get multiple/several people across the league on different teams relaying the same message, you gotta take that for what it is. So the conversations I expect to happen, whether it relays or evolves into a final trade, we got to wait and see.
His brother Matthew at the end of his last season in Calgary, there was trade chatter and Brad Treliving at the time was the GM, and he said “It’s not happening. None of that’s true, we’re not trading him.” And then he got traded in August. So not saying it’s going to follow that same model or pathway, but I fully expect teams to reach out to the Sens and have conversations about Tkachuk. It’ll be up to Staios, and it’ll be up to Brady himself too.
