What Would Red Wings Players Theme Songs Be?
Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

The Red Wings aren’t exactly what I would call a “feel-good” team right now. With the NHL’s longest playoff drought and a stacked division to go up against, Detroit is yet again facing an offseason where they have a lot of work to do and few resources to do it. There will be plenty of time to harp on pessimism, believe me, I have been. But at least for today, I’ve decided to have a bit of fun with an article.

Not that it’s a question anyone has been asking, but with baseball season underway and the ever iconic walk-up songs floating around, it made me wonder what some Red Wings’ “theme songs” would be. So I decided to challenge my journalistic talents here and sift through the record crates to find some tunes I think match some of Detroit’s best players.

If you do want to get your daily dose of some more serious content, I’ll link mine and my co-hosts’ Kicking Tires podcast down below for you to check out.

Moritz Seider: Everlong – Foo Fighters

For the Red Wings superstar defenceman, I land on the Foo Fighters’ biggest song for a handful of reasons. Let’s start with the obvious: it would be a crime to give Seider something modern, as he’s about as old school as it gets in the NHL right now. The style Seider plays is one of the heaviest and hardest styles in the league, he throws reverse hits, takes on big minutes and isn’t afraid to rough it up. I want a 1990s/2000s, hard rock or grunge cut that, despite not fitting the popular mold, is still recognized as excellent. Everlong fits that.

To find why it fits so well, we need to go a little deeper than that. Dave Ghrol wrote the song during a transitional point in his life, after the end of his first marriage. It’s lyrically a mix of melancholy or nostalgic lines about the past and how good things were, and hopeful writing about trying to get back to the good that was.

So how does that connect to Seider? Well, Seider is the product of a serious transition in the Red Wings franchise. After 25 straight years of making the postseason, the Red Wings ended up at the bottom of the league. Seider was drafted with the hope he could become the elite defenceman that Red Wings fans still reminisce over, something like Nick Lidstrom. In doing so, he’s won the Calder and arguably been the Red Wings best player, being the hope for the franchise to this point.

If the Red Wings can ever be that good again, it’s going to come on the back of Mo Seider and his old-school, tough-as-nails play style. How could I not go with Foo Fighters here?

Dylan Larkin: Overtime – Zach Bryan

The Red Wings captain has been at the center of a Red Wings rebuild that essentially saw him spend his best years as part of a decade-long rebuild. He’s endured the brunt of the criticism from fans and national media when the team has fallen short again and again, yet he’s still at the heart of this Red Wings team.

Overtime is a song about restlessness, ambition, and digging your heels in when things look out of reach. The verses are all about chasing a life that is bigger than you and opting to take the hard road to get there. Obviously, it’s hard to overlook the title being Overtime while Dylan Larkin has the most overtime goals in franchise history.

Patrick Kane: Style – Taylor Swift

Before I say anything else, I strongly debated putting Bryan Adam’s Summer of ’69 but I think I’m more proud of my pick for Style here. Obviously Patrick Kane isn’t who he once was, though he’s still a fantastic player. The glory days of the Blackhawks dynasty are no more, Patrick Kane is now a veteran looking to do his part to help the future of the Red Wings and T-Swift is the pick for me here.

Let me be honest for a second, the infamous story of Patrick Kane chatting up Taylor Swift before being interrupted by Dennis Savard did play a part in this. Mainly though, having “we never go out of style” as its main chorus fits, there are so few guys in the NHL who have aged as well as Patrick Kane. I’m no Swiftie but even I can acknowledge Style is an absolute anthem and of course the man named Showtime would have a real arena-rocker as his theme song.

The ageless wonder that is Patrick Kane aligns pretty well with Taylor Swift as two of the 2010’s biggest superstars. To me, there’s no song that aligns with Patrick Kane better than Style.

Lucas Raymond: Jimmy Cooks – Drake & 21 Savage

When I think of Lucas Raymond, I think of swagger. The sweet dekes, the no-look passes and the wicked snipes have made Lucas Raymond one of the NHL’s premiere highlight reel forwards. When the puck is on his stick, Raymond is smooth as butter out there and it doesn’t get much smoother than Drake and 21 Savage on a song.

The first half of Jimmy Cooks is all about that bravado that Raymond is full of. It’s full of energy and yet still suave. The second half is a lot grittier, it’s captures that “killer instinct” that Raymond has in big moments. The goal against Montreal in 2023-24 still lives in my head. It’s the two parts of what makes Raymond so special. There’s the flashy talent that gets the fans going and the bite that keeps him in the big moments.

Another honorable mention to Future Islands’ King of Sweden, and as good as that song is, it’s a little too on the nose for my liking. But it’s hard to deny he’s not Sweden’s best player at this point after leading them in points at the World Championship and Olympics this season.

I know this isn’t exactly what fans are hoping for when they’re looking for news about the Red Wings. Believe me, I’d much rather be writing about the top-six forward the Red Wings signed. But this is going to be a long offseason, so I hope this at least gave you a bit of a laugh.

If you want one more theme for the road, Filip Zadina is pretty obviously The One That Got Away by Katy Perry, right? Because man, in another life.
