What’s next for the Oilers after second straight Stanley Cup Final loss?

The 2025 Stanley Cup Final is in the books, and for the second straight year, the Edmonton Oilers are reeling after defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers.

Despite the bad luck of running into what Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk has declared a dynasty two years in a row, all general manager Stan Bowman and the team can do now is look to find a way to build a team that can overcome Florida if it comes down to it next year.

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and Insider and President of Hockey Content Frank Seravalli discussed what Edmonton could look to do to avoid this fate in 2026 and get Connor McDavid his first ring.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Let’s quickly touch on the Edmonton Oilers who now bow out in a second straight Stanley Cup Final, and the sentiment is they kind of worked their way through the playoffs, at least earlier on in this postseason it was like “Hey, maybe this is like the first Tampa Bay team that won it or that Washington team that won it,” where you’re not the most complete roster, not the best team on paper you’ve ever thrown forward, but somehow it’s just a group that finds a way, and I think this Oilers team definitely got exposed for their flaws more in this Stanley Cup Final than maybe they even did last year.

Frank Seravalli: I view it, and this isn’t any excuse making at all, I view it as more what the Florida Panthers did to the Edmonton Oilers than what the Edmonton Oilers didn’t do against the Florida Panthers. They do need to make changes. I think there are definite flaws to this team, and I think the biggest one that was highlighted yet again was the disparity in net… You need better than what you’ve had, and that’s one. I think the Oilers probably need a bit more speed.
