With the goaltending in the provincial capital of Alberta still providing headaches, when will the Edmonton Oilers finally pull the trigger?
Though the team has made it to the Stanley Cup Final in each of the past two seasons, with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard helping the Oilers get close to the promised land, there’s great concern about whether the tandem is good enough to get Edmonton out of another early-season funk.
After a 7-4 beatdown at the hands of the Washington Capitals, in which Skinner allowed five goals on 19 shots, many fans around Edmonton are growing weary of the daily goaltending woes with their team.
On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss if, and when, the Oilers will make a change between the pipes.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Edmonton’s coming towards the end of a really, really long and gnarly road trip here. They play again tonight in Tampa Bay and the expectation is that they’re playing Calvin Pickard, which I think makes you wince a little bit. Listen 9-9-4, that’s just not good enough, and again, we’re past the quarter mark of the season here. So, something’s got to give in Edmonton. I would not be the least bit surprised if they, by December 1, have a different goaltending duo and maybe it’s just calling up Connor Ingram from Bakersfield. They acquired him from Utah at the tail end of training camp. Maybe that’s all it is, but something’s got to give because another night like last night they just can’t keep happening.
Carter Hutton: We’re not far removed from the Colorado Avalanche switching both their goalies in the season. It can happen. Things can change, and I guess I know there’s a lot of dancing that has to go around to make that happen, but like you said, when you see a Calvin Pickard start now, you’re almost nervous about it. It like it feels like it’s inevitable that they can’t sustain, or they’re gonna have to score five or six goals to even stay in that race.
