Abbotsford Canucks’ Calder Cup-winning head coach Manny Malhotra led practices on Thursday and Friday. He met with CanucksArmy and shared what it’s like for him to be leading this group and what some things he’s looking for in the players, both in practice and in the showcase:

“It’s exciting. They come here bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and ready to learn and want to get better. They’re eager to show what they have to offer. So that’s always exciting when you have an excited group back on the ice for the first time in a structured environment like this. Obviously, some of the guys are coming from different camps and stuff, but it takes a whole new meaning once you put on an NHL jersey and do it in front of the brass.

“I think the buzzword that everybody uses compete. I think coming into a weekend like this, where it’s all new guys who haven’t played with each other trying to learn a new system. The biggest thing is looking at the details within their game; their intensity on the ice; how many puck battles they’re coming up with; are they stopping and starting in the right spots; do they understand the systems in terms of where they need to be. All those little habits and details is what we’re kind of keeping an eye on. We’re not expecting a full team type game where everybody’s dialed into the system, everybody’s in the right place at the right time. There’s going to be mistakes out there, but the energy and the effort that they put into the game will make up for a lot of this.”
