According to reports around the league this week, the Vancouver Canucks are open for business. They appear to have accepted they may not make the playoffs this season, and are willing to part with some pieces on the team if the return feels right. But which players will the Canucks look to sell off first?
Jeff Paterson from Canucks Army joined Daily Faceoff Live to talk about the Canucks and which players may be on the move first.
Jeff Paterson: I think every team that’s headed for the playoffs should take a long, hard look at Kiefer Sherwood. This guy, he just balls. He plays hard, he scores. I think he’s got way better skill than he was ever given credit for, has taken advantage of an opportunity, leads the NHL in hits. He did last year as well, with the 19 goals. I think he would be a really compelling piece to any team that has designs on going on some sort of run of the playoffs. So I think the Canucks have to do their best to create a bit of a bidding war.
I do wonder if they touch a guy like Conor Garland. They recommitted to him. He’s got a six-year extension in his back pocket. He’s playing the final year of a deal at $5 million. Plays hard, there’s enough offense there. Again, if you were looking to beef up your third line, your middle six, I think Conor Garland would be a nice add for any team there. And again, this is a guy that’s played in Arizona, Vancouver. I would think he would want a taste of winning and playoff hockey.
So I don’t know what, if anything, they could get for Evander Kane. We’re at the end of November and he doesn’t have a 5-on-5 goal yet this season. He leads the team in penalties. That’s all part of the Evander Kane experience.
That’s part of this too. How deep do the Canucks go, and ultimately how much value do they have, how much can they extract from other teams? I think Sherwood could return you something. I think Garland could. After that, you’re looking at depth pieces that might get you some mid-round draft picks here or there. Doesn’t exactly scream rebuild, I don’t think.
