Calgary Flames star Nazem Kadri has been at the forefront of NHL trade rumours over the past weeks, mainly focused on a reunion with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Kadri, 34, is entering the fourth year of a seven-year deal he signed with the Calgary Flames in 2022 . He signed with Calgary following a Stanley Cup win with the Colorado Avalanche, but has seen less playoff success on his newest team.
With this considered, as well as the league's shortage of available centres, Kadri's name has been widely talked about -- the Calgary Flames haven't made the playoffs in three years , and don't seem to be taking any big leaps as the conference around them gets stronger. One particular team he has been linked to? The one that drafted him; the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Kadri has now directly commented on the rumours:
"It's happened quite often over the last couple of months, so it's a little bit bizarre just scrolling around and seeing your face pop up and name pop up," Kadri added."Obviously, the rumour mill is pretty strong, especially around these parts. And a lot of the times, the rumours can catch some fire, and the fire turns into bigger fires. It is what it is."
"I mean, there's not a whole lot in terms of sports going on right now," he said at the Nazem Kadri Charity Golf Classic. "I think it's definitely a topic to talk about. And hey, why not talk about it?"
One thing's for sure: Kadri loves Calgary, and is in no rush to leave:
"It's been excellent, it's been excellent," Kadri told Knight Shift when asked about his current hockey home. "Calgary is such a great city, especially for the family and I. Very scenic and beautiful, and we've got some good players along the way. So I appreciate the C of Red, for sure."
Despite these rumours, it is more likely than not that Kadri stays in Calgary; his trade protection will allow him to dictate any move, and he would need the motivation to waive such.
We will see what's next for the 34-year-old, but expect to see him in Flames colours next season.
