Why scouts are already calling a Dallas Stars prospect the next Logan Stankoven

The Dallas Stars didn't have a first or second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, but that didn't stop them from walking away with one of the most intriguing names of the weekend.

When Dallas selected Cameron Schmidt 94th overall, eyebrows were raised across the league. The 5-foot-7 forward from the WHL's Vancouver Giants doesn't have the size scouts typically covet, but his production suggests the Stars might have landed another late-round gem.

In two seasons with Vancouver, Schmidt scored an eye-popping 71 goals and added 63 assists. Despite being one of junior hockey's most dangerous scorers, his draft stock slid because of his height. For Dallas, that slide could prove to be a blessing.

Fans and analysts have already noticed the parallels to Logan Stankoven. Like Schmidt, Stankoven was doubted for his frame but proved that skill and determination matter more than height once you step on NHL ice.

Why Cameron Schmidt could follow Logan Stankoven's blueprint in Dallas

After the pick, team representatives told NHL.com,

"The Stars have time to develop him, let's give him a shot."
That patience is important because Dallas doesn't need Schmidt to make an immediate jump. With stars like Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz, and Mikko Rantanen leading the charge, plus prospects Arttu Hyry and Emil Hemming in the system, Schmidt can focus on refining his game.

Draft experts already view him as a "first-round talent" taken in the third round. As Blackout Dallas put it:

"If developed properly, Schmidt could be the second coming of Stankoven in Dallas."

The key challenge will be his ability to handle bigger and faster defenders at the pro level. If Schmidt adapts, the Stars may have secured one of the best steals of the 2025 draft class.

Personally, I think Dallas has once again proven they know how to find value beyond the first round.
