Why Tristan Jarry’s New Goalie Pads Are Raising Eyebrows

Tristan Jarry hasn’t even played a game for the Edmonton Oilers, but his new goalie gear is already getting attention, making it clear this trade wasn’t exactly a last-minute deal. While the pads were being done just minutes after the trade was announced (which means likely before), at the very least, the post-teasing his new gear suggests he is excited to get going and committed to the team.

New pics from Vaughn Custom Sports show Jarry’s Oilers-themed equipment. The video that accompanies the post suggests the person who made the gear was not the least bit surprised when news dropped that the trade was official. It’s almost like he and a few others knew something…

The new gear features a strong blue base with the Oilers’ orange stripes, offering a simple, updated look that complements the team’s style. Vaughn’s VX1 logo is all over the pads, blocker, and catcher.

The timing of this reveal is key. Edmonton was literally holding a media availability a couple of hours before the pads were shown off on social media. The designer was either already working on them or had them underway the second things were finalized. Word is that Jarry will be in net on Saturday night as the Oilers take on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether his new gear gets approved in time for that game is unclear.

The Oilers Had Been Working on This Jarry Deal For Some Time

Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Jarry was potentially ready to move on from the Penguins, and he was most excited about the opportunity to go to the Oilers. “Like if he was going to leave Pittsburgh, this was a place that he was very happy to go to,” said the NHL insider.

He added that the idea of this trade had been in the works for some time. He explained:

“… initially, what kind of stopped it from happening at that was that they couldn’t make it work financially. The Penguins had made it very clear they were not going to keep money on Jarry and so Edmonton was faced with the prospect that they were going to have to do some roster surgery to get this done. Ideally they wanted to pair Jarry with Skinner, not trade Skinner for him. But what kind of happened was Edmonton realized that they wanted to make this deal with the salary limitations, they would have to make the move for Skinner and they would have to move Kulak. And from what I understand, one of the things that changed over the last few days is it initially Pittsburgh was not going to take Kulak and now they did, so it got to a situation where Edmonton and Pittsburgh were able to find the way to make the money work.”

Edmonton Sports Talk radio’s Tom Gazzola mentioned that both Jarry and Stuart Skinner weren’t opposed to fresh starts.

GM Stan Bowman told the media on Friday, “We’ve watched him very closely and we’ve been impressed with his performance over the course of his career.” In other words, the Oilers had been scouting this idea and it could be that Jarry was aware of this and might have been tipped off that a deal was coming.

Perhaps so were the Oilers, as a lot was being made about the extra long hugs between Skinner and Calvin Pickard.

Fans went crazy when they saw Vaughn’s post on social media. Many saw it as a signal he’d known about the trade for some time. Others wonder if he’s just super gung-ho about getting to Edmonton, and the goalie gear was a top priority.

Basically, Jarry’s new gear is more than just a new look. It shows he’s serious. At the end of the day, all that matters is how he plays. Tristan Jarry is an Oiler, and he’s ready for a fresh start.
