Gustafsson Nyberg is joining the Wild on Thursday in Dallas. He won't be eligible to play in the postseason, but he could make his debut in one of Minnesota's final four regular season games between now and next Tuesday. By burning the first year of his entry-level contract this season, he'll be a restricted free agent in the summer of 2027. His cap hit will be just under $1 million next season.
In addition to having a fantastic first name, Gustafsson Nyberg has some intriguing upside as an undrafted free agent. He's a 6'6", 225-pound left shot defenseman who spent the last two seasons at the University of Connecticut after coming over from Sweden and playing his first year of college hockey at Northern Michigan.
Gustafsson Nyberg recorded 11 assists in 38 games for the Huskies this season. He was a plus-18 and blocked 51 shots. Nyberg had 11 points (1 goal, 10 assists) and 62 blocks in his first season with UConn in 2024-25. He had a career-high 23 points (6 goals, 17 assists) in 42 games in his final season of junior hockey in Sweden in 2022-23.
The main thing that stands out about Gustafsson Nyberg is his size. He's a big, physical defenseman who projects as a potential checking, shot-blocking third-pair defenseman in the NHL. But he's got some skating ability and skill, too, as shown in his first AHL point with the Iowa Wild on Wednesday night.

Gustafsson Nyberg's NHL debut presumably won't happen in Thursday night's big Wild-Stars game in Dallas, but it could come in one of the final three games after that.
Although he isn't eligible to play in the playoffs, he's someone to keep in mind heading into next season. With Zach Bogosian and Jeff Petry set to hit free agency, there's room for a new sixth defenseman alongside Quinn Hughes, Brock Faber, Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin, and Jake Middleton.
