Will any current NHL player hit 2,000 points?
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche recorded his 1,100th point in his NHL career on Monday, putting him in rarified air among the current stars of the NHL game.

At just 30 years of age, MacKinnon is in shouting distance of making history as the second player in NHL history (along with Wayne Gretzky) of eclipsing the 2,000-point mark.

He’s not alone. Connor McDavid is a year and a half younger and is already up to 1,167 career points, while 38-year-old Sidney Crosby is just 258 more points away, and he’s not showing signs of slowing down.

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton discussed whether or not any of today’s biggest NHL stars have any chance of joining Gretzky in the 2,000-point club.

Tyler Yaremchuk: It was a milestone night for Nathan MacKinnon. He captured his 1,110th point in his NHL career. He did it in 917 games, and it kind of just got me thinking. The race to 2,000 points in the NHL, obviously there’s only been one other player to hit that mark, it’s Wayne Gretzky… I do think it’s interesting, [MacKinnon], 30 years old now… He’s at 1,100. Do you think Nathan MacKinnon can average 100 points a year for the next nine seasons and get to 2,000?

Carter Hutton: Part of me wants to say no, right? But the other part is like, the way these guys take care of themselves, and you look at the production of Crosby and where he’s at… I do think it’s possible, and the game is just opening up more and more where we’re creating offense. There’s high scoring games, so he has the potential. If you look at where Crosby’s numbers are, it hasn’t really dropped off a ton… The McDavid is the one for me where I think he’s going to get there. It feels like it’s inevitable for him getting to that point.
