The Carolina Hurricanes may be Stanley Cup champions, but with the way that general manager Eric Tulsky operates, he is not likely to rest on his laurels this offseason.
Even with all but two players, goalie Frederik Andersen and defenseman Mike Reilly, under team control for next season, the Hurricanes have earned a reputation for being one of those teams that is in on every impact player that becomes available.
With the two-time Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers adding a star forward in Brady Tkachuk over the weekend, is Tulsky’s hand forced to make a move to keep pace?
On Monday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, host Tyler Yaremchuk and co-host and former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton were joined by NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period to discuss what Tulsky’s plans could be this offseason to ensure that his team stays atop the list of Stanley Cup favorites as other team’s rush to improve to catch up to them.
Carter Hutton: The bar’s been set. Someone in the chat brought up a question to ask you about what does Eric Tulsky bring to the table here, right? The Carolina Hurricanes are going to be active. they’re still in this win-now window was well. They have a very good team. What can we expect from the Hurricanes here as we move into this chaotic time?
David Pagnotta: Well, I mean, the good thing for them is pretty much the entire team is already locked up. So they’ve got, at the very least, they know they’ve got a championship caliber roster to deal with. Freddie Andersen’s a pending unrestricted free agent, and before the playoffs started the idea was that he will not be coming back. I don’t know if that’s shifted, to be perfectly honest. They have Kochetkov, obviously they have Bussi… Outside of that, we know they’re not afraid to get involved in the big fish. They’re one of the teams that Brady Tkachuk was willing to go to. I think whenever there’s a big-name player, you look at certain teams that always check. Carolina’s always one of them. If there’s a play for a big-name player that they feel fits their mold and can make them better, then I think they explore it. At the same time, the sense of urgency isn’t there like it was before because A) they’ve won and B) they know they can run it back and go for another one.
