William Stromgren’s NHL debut was something fans were anticipating in the 2024-25 season. He made a great jump in the second half of his rookie season and left a lasting impression going into his last off-season. The following season, his spot in the call up order started to fall further and further down as he struggled to reach that level of play on a consistent basis.

William Stromgren was drafted by the Calgary Flames back in 2021 in the NHL Draft. His name was called in round two, 45th overall. His first appearance in North America was for the Wranglers for a pair of games at the end of the 2022-23 season. He then played the next full season, playing 68 games and putting up seven goals and 20 assists. He hit his stride towards the end of his first season and went on to have four points in six playoff games with the Wranglers.

2024-25 expectations

After the glimmers of potential we saw out of Stromgren in opportune times, his sophomore season was expected to be a breakout season for the young forward. William Stromgren had the potential to be higher up in the lineup and on the ice in bigger game scenarios. He was also on a short list of prospects that were expected to make their NHL debut in the 2024-25 season.

2024-25 results

The expectations for Stromgren were high and unfortunately, beyond what he could keep up with. William Stromgren still had standout performances and multi-point games over the course of the season but couldn’t always string them together. He went up and down the lineup and was called upon in shootout scenarios. His best stretch of games was from November 23rd to December 10th, when he had a six game point streak with eight points.

Over the course of the year, he had 12 multi-point games and finished second in team assists just under Jeremie Poirier. His stat line finished at 70 games played, 14 goals and 35 assists for his best professional year to date.

When William Stromgren reflected on his season at exit meetings he said:

“Well, that’s an improvement, that’s it, for sure. It’s been a lot of ups and downs. Like, points is just points, you know, you want to make it to the NHL and my consistency level has gotta be better. My highs are good, but I have my low needs to be better, and points is just points. You want to get your teammates better, get your linemates better, you want to help your team succeed and I just gotta be more consistent than that.”

Next season’s expectations

Stromgren went into this summer with a plan and something to prove. He wants to get bigger and stronger and he’s going to be eager to show off his off-season work once Flames training camp comes around. It’s not very likely he makes the Flames out of camp but if he’s shown strides, he could be on a shortlist for call ups. In his last year of his entry level contract, Stromgren is playing for an extension and a chance to be among his peers who established roles at the highest level.

Stromgren said:

“The older you get, the less time you have left. You don’t get a hundred opportunities. You only get a certain amount and if you’re not ready to take advantage of those opportunities too, you’re probably not going to be an NHLer. Like, you gotta have that mindset. If I get three shots, I gotta give it all in those three shots. I have to be better for every opportunity I get.”
