Zach Nehring was a third-round pick for Winnipeg, and now the NCAA prospect has opened up a potential saga after revealing he may not sign with the Jets.

The Winnipeg Jets have built a very bright future for themselves around a great core, and after finishing No. 1 in the Western Conference last year, this is a team optimistic that they can make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Last off-season however, they had major drama with an NCAA prospect when Rutger McGroarty refused to play for the team, and as a result, they traded him to the Penguins for a WHL prospect.

Another Rutger McGroarty situation brewing?

Unfortunately for the Jets, another McGroarty like situation may be brewing, with The Hockey News revealing the latest on former third-round pick Zach Nehring, who plays with Western Michigan.

Despite his recent run of success, the Jets aren't able to give Nehring an entry level deal until he graduates from university in which they will have 30 days to either make a contract offer or let the rights expire and he becomes a free agent.

The now 20-year-old winger is starting to show his upside and has played well in league's and programs where other top end talent has been present. The last thing Jets fans want is another Rutger McGroarty situation where an American prospect isn't interested in playing for the Jets

While he's been active with the Jets this off-season, after McGroarty, it's easy to understand why the Jets are worried, and with a 30-day time frame to sign him to his ELC once his college career is over, there are concerns in the organization.

For now though, he's set for another season at Western Michigan after posting 13 goals and 30 points there a season ago, with many hoping that he signs with the team and can make an impact with them for years to come.
