With three playoff rounds complete, the Calgary Flames’ 2024 draft picture is firming up
David Kirouac-USA TODAY Sports

The second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs concluded on Monday evening, and with the completion of that round, the Calgary Flames’ picture for the 2024 NHL Draft is becoming clearer.

The Flames had three conditional picks that hinged on playoff results. Two have failed to convert.

  • If Vegas advanced to the second round, the Flames would receive a 2025 second-round pick instead of a 2024 third-round pick from the Noah Hanifin trade (This didn’t happen.)
  • If Vancouver advanced to the third round, the Flames would receive a 2024 third-round pick instead of a 2024 fourth-round pick from the Elias Lindholm trade. (This didn’t happen.)
  • If Dallas advances to the Stanley Cup Final, the Flames will receive a 2026 third-round pick from the Chris Tanev trade.

Here’s how the Flames’ 2024 draft selections are shaping up so far.

1st round, 9th overall

This is the Flames’ original pick. They’ve selected ninth overall twice in club history: they selected Brent Krahn in 2000 and Dion Phaneuf in 2003.

1st round, 28th overall

This is Vancouver’s pick which was sent to the Flames in the Elias Lindholm trade. They’ve selected 28th overall four times in their history. Three of those selections were in the second round (way back in the day): Guy Chouinard in 1974, Bobby Simpson in 1976 and Don Laurence in 1977. In 2013, in the first round, they selected Morgan Klimchuk at 28th overall.

2nd round, 41st overall

This is the Flames’ original pick. They’ve selected 41st overall three times, taking Etienne Belzile in 1990, Francois Groleau in 1991 and Andrei Taratukhin in 1991.

2nd round, 62nd to 65th overall

This is Dallas’ pick which was sent to the Flames in the Chris Tanev trade. If Dallas advances to the Stanley Cup Final, this pick will be 64th or 65th overall. If they don’t advance, this pick will be 62nd or 63rd overall. The Flames have selected in this range quite frequently – they’ve chosen between 62nd and 65 overall 11 times – Kent Nilsson, selected in 1976 at 64th overall, is easily their best pick.

3rd round, 74th overall

This is the Flames’ original pick. They’ve selected 74th twice, taking Dan Ryder in 2005 and Ryan Howse in 2009.

3rd round, 84th overall

This is Vegas’ pick which was sent to the Flames in the Noah Hanifin trade. The Flames selected 84th in back-to-back drafts, taking Gary Socha in 1988 and Ryan O’Leary in 1989.

4th round, 106th overall

This is the Flames’ original pick. They’ve selected 106th once, taking Roman Rozakov in 1999.

4th round, 107th overall

This was New Jersey’s pick, sent to Vancouver for Curtis Lazar, and subsequently sent to Calgary in the Elias Lindholm trade. The Flames have selected 107th overall twice, selecting Jerome Butler in 1991 and Nils Ekman in 1994.

If the Flames keep these fourth-round picks, it’ll be the first time they’ve had consecutive draft choices since 2002.

6th round, 170th overall

This is the Flames’ original pick. They’ve selected 170th once, taking Matt Underhill in 1999.
