Zachary Bolduc is off to a great start with the Montreal Canadiens, scoring a goal in each of his first three games with the Habs and showing that he’s capable of putting the puck in the net with his skills. He was expected to add some offensive punch to the Habs’ attack… and so far, that’s what we’re seeing from him. and so far, that’s what we’re seeing from him. Marco D’Amico, on the Processus podcast, said something that really interested me about Bolduc: in his eyes, the Québécois can become “more than just a top-6 winger” in Montreal. And his comments are relevant because it’s true that Bolduc has that potential. The Québécois can become an important player on the top-6, of course… but we’re also talking about a player who can become really important on the powerplay in Montreal. The popular observation, at the moment, is as follows: Bolduc impresses and can become an impact player for the Canadiens.
Bolduc’s impact, so far, is more than interesting. The Québécois uses his shot to create scoring chances. He’s using his aggressiveness to finish checks – something I really like about his game – and you see him give 100% every time he takes the ice. That’s all you want from a player, after all. We’re not seeing it with Juraj Slafkovsky so far this season… Getting back to Bolduc, it’s important to mention that he’s filling exactly the role he was supposed to fill when the Canadiens picked him up in July. It’s not quite there yet on the powerplay, but Bolduc is helping the Canadiens five-on-five. He adds a different element to the Habs’ top-9 because the Habs needed a player like him: a player who can have a certain offensive touch… but who also wants to be involved in all three zones of the rink. And he fits in well, too, with the culture the Habs are trying to instill in Montreal.
