The Minnesota Wild shocked the sports world on Friday by trading away rookie defenseman Zeev Buium as part of the package for former Canucks captain Quinn Hughes . Buium, to his credit, made an immediate impact in his first game with his new team, tallying two points in Vancouver’s 2-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Buium Has The Potential To Be Quinn Hughes’ Replacement

With the amount of media scrutiny surrounding the Canucks for trading away their captain, Buium seems to have what it takes to revolutionize Vancouver’s defense. The 20-year-old rookie has 16 points through 32 games in 2025-26, marking the second-most among rookie defensemen behind Matthew Schaefer (23).

The two defensemen will be linked together for the rest of their careers due to the blockbuster nature of the trade. It might not be the worst thing for Buium, who is already showing promise early in his career. Buium will undoubtedly continue to familiarize himself with his new team, and it’s not a stretch to say that he’ll be one of the key pieces in the Canucks rebuild.

Some of that potential was on display throughout his first game with Vancouver, as the defenseman tallied his first goal and assist as a member of the team during Sunday’s contest. The contest saw Buium become just the third defenseman in Canucks history to record multiple points in a team debut with his third multi-point game of the season.

The Young Defenseman Is Already Showing Development

If Sunday’s game wasn’t enough to solidify Buium as one of the best young defensemen this year, looking at his production with the Wild might help his case. The University of Denver product tallied 14 points through 31 games as a member of Minnesota this season, and had been finding his groove over the past few games.

Buium spent most of the season being paired with veteran Zach Bogosian, and the two seemed to work well together for the third-place Wild. Bogosian, an 18-year veteran, was the perfect player to aid in the development of Buium due to his experience and playing style.

Buium will now look to Vancouver’s veteran core of Filip Hronek, P.O. Joseph, and Marcus Petterson to help guide his transition to the Canucks and development as a defenseman. The defensive core for the team has plenty of experience of its own, and I’d expect at least a couple of the older players to take Buium under their wing.

Playing for the Canucks could be a great opportunity for Buium to take on a bigger role as a younger player. Sunday’s action is any indicator that Vancouver is thinking the same thing, and having the belief of his team behind him could serve as a confidence boost for Buium.

Youth Seems To Be The Answer For Vancouver

The Canucks have been on the wrong end of the standings for most of the 2024-25 season, but committing to a rebuild might pay off in the long run. Their entire return from the Wild focuses on youth, with all three of the players (Buium, Liam Ohgren, and Marco Rossi) being under the age of 25.

Vancouver immediately added all three players to their active roster, showing signs of the team believing in their players just two days after acquiring them. Roster overhauls are always tough for teams committed to rebuilding, but a gesture of good faith could very well help the three players turn the season around.

Given that Vancouver could have a high draft pick in 2026, Buium and company may not be the last of the youth movement starting to take hold for the Canucks. This would be especially true if the team can draft a player like Gavin McKenna, who would be a game-changer for the offense should he be available to them.

The team also seems to have the right veterans to lead the charge back to contention, which could make all the difference in the coming seasons. With veterans such as Elias Pettersson, Conor Garland, and Brock Boeser, the Canucks have put themselves in a good spot to develop the young talent they acquired.

End Of My Zeev Buium Rant

There’s a lot to be said about the belief that the Canucks have already shown in their new acquisition. Buium has the ability to be a franchise cornerstone for Vancouver, and the team obviously sees that, considering he was included in the trade.

Having the opportunity to be part of a rebuild can help Buium grow into the player people expect him to be, which could be a huge payoff for the team. Buium’s production will hopefully take a big step as he gets more comfortable with Vancouver’s system, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s their best defenseman sooner or later.

It’s too early to say who won the trade, but Vancouver sure got a good one in the young defenseman. Buium’s on track to become a great player, and if that pans out, the Canucks will have made one of the best player-driven decisions in a long time. I’m looking forward to seeing him grow as a player, and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out for him.
