Jayson Tatum is a two-time Olympic gold medalist. He was part of the United States roster that secured gold in a 98-87 win over France on Saturday. However, Tatum was drastically underutilized throughout the tournament and asked to play a role that didn't suit his diverse and high-level skill set. Steve Kerr also benched the reigning NBA champion on two occasions.
During a postgame news conference, Tatum was asked about his struggles throughout the tournament and whether he is already considering his spot on the 2028 team.
"It was a tough personal experience on the court, but I'm not going to make any decision off emotions," Tatum said. "If you asked me right now if I was going to play in 2028 -- it is four years from now and I [would have] to take time and think about that. So I'm not going to make any decision based off how this experience was or how I felt individually."
Four years is a long time, and even more so in terms of basketball. Anything could happen between now and then. Tatum could have another two championships to his name. He could change teams. New stars could enter the league. As such, he's being smart in avoiding any early commitments, especially without knowing who the head coach will be.
However, Tatum may be better served sitting out of the 2028 tournament. Team USA disrespected him over the past few weeks. It damaged his reputation and credibility as a star. It placed the first legitimate blemish on his career resume. And the worst part was that Tatum had done nothing to earn that sort of cold shoulder treatment.
Tatum will be 30 years old by the next Olympics. He already has two gold medals. His resume speaks for itself. So, unless there is a guarantee of a primary role on the roster, Tatum would be better served saving himself for the battles of the NBA regular season and playoffs.
After all, the sour taste of the last two weeks will likely stick with him moving forward. He deserved to have his talent showcased, not be shunned and stuck in the weak-side corner with little explanation as to why.
