Mistimed tweet leaks men's Canadian Olympics roster
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

The men’s Canadian Olympic roster has leaked a day early.

A mistimed tweet, as shown in a screen shot from Sean Leahy, details just who the Canadians will bring to Beijing.

On the backend, Brandon Gormley, Mat Robinson, Alex Grant, Mark Berberio, Owen Power, Maxim Noreau, Tyler Wotherspoon and Jason Demers are being called up.

Lastly, a trio of ‘tenders in Devon Levi, Edward Pasquale and Matt Tomkins will represent the Canadians.

Eric Staal, David Deharnais, Mark Barberio and Jason Demers will be looked to as leaders on the roster. The latter two have spent this season playing on the big ice with Ak Bars Kazan in the KHL.

Deharnais, meanwhile, has spent the last three seasons with HC Gribourg-Gotteron in the Swiss National League. There, he’s scored 112 points in 134 games.

And lastly, Staal, who hasn’t played in the NHL this season, will be looked to as a likely captain on the team. He joined the AHL’s Iowa Wild weeks ago in preparation. In four games, he scored two goals and five points.

Some young guns in Mason McTavish and Owen Power will be looked to in big roles as well. Both had been with the Canadian World Junior team prior to the early cancellation of the tournament.

McTavish, 18, played some games in both the NHL and AHL this year, but was assigned to the OHL after a nine-game stint with the Anaheim Ducks. Drafted by them 3rd overall in the 2021 draft, he was reassigned to the OHL where he’s split time between the Peterborough Petes and the Hamilton Bulldogs having been traded to the latter. In seven OHL games this year, he’s scored nine goals and 12 points.

Power, 19, returned to the University of Michigan this year where he’s been dominant scoring 26 points in 24 games. He joined Team Canada at the World Championships last year where he scored three points in 10 games.
