All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

With the trade for Ryan McMahon now complete, it would seem New York Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman has fulfilled one of his three priorities. He can now cross third base off the list, which leaves the rotation and bullpen as his remaining priorities. However, according to one Yankees writer, Cashman might not be done with the infield. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported this after the McMahon trade: “The Yankees may not be done adding to their infield. A team source said the Yankees are interested in adding a right-handed hitter who could play the infield.” Kirschner adds that the Yankees have had interest in Willi Castro and Amed Rosario. But the question now is, how would another player fit in the Yankees’ infield? Needless to say, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. aren’t going anywhere, and McMahon is just getting there. That leaves the low-hanging fruit. Anthony Volpe has been at the center of controversy all this season. His 13 errors, many of which had come at make-or-break moments, amount to the second-highest total in the game. In addition, his bat has not been able to compensate, hitting .214/.286/.407 with 14 home runs. There was always a lot to like about Volpe. He won a Gold Glove in his rookie year, his power has always been promising and his speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, his glove has become a liability and his speed has also produced very few results. Volpe has swiped just 10 bags in 17 attempts. His power is the one thing that still has some upside, but it hasn’t been enough to justify a spot in the lineup. Both Castro and Rosario have been far more productive at the plate this season than Volpe. Kirschner doesn’t clarify how serious the Yankees are in their pursuit of another infielder, but that most likely isn’t available information. Having just turned 24, Volpe could still become the type of player that was expected from him as a top prospect. However, his recent performance has weighed heavily on his team’s efforts and it may be buying him a ticket out of the Bronx — or at least a spot on the bench.

Brutal setback could be end of the line for former Titans first-round pick

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks may have already sealed his fate ahead of a make-or-break 2025 season. On Saturday, the No. 18 overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft suffered a broken collarbone while making an outstanding diving catch along the sideline during training-camp practice on a pass from rookie quarterback Cam Ward. The play was a distillation of Burks' pro career thus far, one that could be special if not beset by injuries. Burks has only appeared in 27 of a possible 51 career regular-season games. During his rookie season, Burks missed Weeks 5-9 with a foot/toe injury. He also suffered a concussion against the Philadelphia Eagles, forcing him to miss two additional games. In 2023, he was sidelined by a knee injury from Oct. 1 through Oct. 15, followed by another three-game absence the next month after he was carted off with a head injury in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last season, Burks was limited to five games after tearing his ACL during practice. He appeared to be in prime form on his spectacular grab during the play he was injured, showing off his tantalizing potential (and no lingering effects from his knee injury) by laying out to make the catch. But as has been the case throughout Burks' career, his giant step forward was met with two backward strides. In May, the Titans declined to pick up Burks' fifth-year rookie option, which would have paid him a projected $15.493 million in 2026, per Over The Cap. Over his first three seasons, Burks has 53 receptions, 699 receiving yards and one touchdown. Tennessee invested heavily in improving its wide receiver depth this offseason, insulating it from the effects of Burks' most recent injury. During free agency, the Titans added Tyler Lockett and Van Jefferson. They selected Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft while also signing Ward's college teammate, Xavier Restrepo, as an undrafted free agent. Burks' path to playing time was already challenged by the offseason moves, but his broken clavicle could knock him out of the rotation for good. If Burks is ever going to live up to his draft status, it's become increasingly more likely it won't be in Tennessee.

Los Angeles Lakers Officially Sign Basketball Legend's Son

Augustas Marčiulionis played all four seasons of his college career for St Marry's. He finished last year with averages of 14.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.3 steals per contest while shooting 44.6% from the field and 34.7% from the three-point range in 35 games. On Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers officially announced that they had signed the 23-year-old (and three others). Via The Los Angeles Lakers: "The Lakers have signed guard RJ Davis, forward Eric Dixon, forward Arthur Kaluma and guard Augustas Marčiulionis." Marčiulionis went unselected in the 2025 NBA Draft last month. Trevor Lane of Lakers Nation reported more details about the signings. Via Lane: "I’m told these are exhibit 10 deals. Exhibit 10s have the ability to be converted to two way contracts. Brings these players into camp with the Lakers to let them compete. E10s also provide a bonus if, after being waived, the player signs with South Bay and stays for at least 60 days" Marčiulionis is also the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Šarūnas. Via ESPN Jonathan Givony (on June 26): "The two-time WCC player of the year missed the pre-draft process with a foot injury but will be healthy in late July. Son of hall of famer Šarūnas Marčiulionis." In the past, the Lakers have done an excellent job of developing undrafted players such as Austin Reaves and Alex Caruso. Via Ballislife.com (on June 13): "HBD Sarunas Marciulionis! The Lithuanian legend was a master of the euro step getting by defenders with his behind the back move."

Yankees desire for versatile utilityman could lead to a deadline addition

The New York Yankees were dealt another blow to their roster, as Aaron Judge will hit the injured list with a flexor strain, and when he returns he’ll need to return as a designated hitter. Giancarlo Stanton is expected to start getting outfield reps, but I’d also expect the Yankees to continue pursuing a bat that can hit from the right-handed side and play shortstop. Willi Castro, who a free agent at season’s end, is expected to be traded by the Twins at the trade deadline, and the Yankees are among teams interested. He’s a name who continues to come up in trade conversations for the Bronx Bombers, a renewal of talks that took playce over the offseason, sources tell Empire Sports Media. The switch-hitting utilityman has a 109 OPS+ and has hit better against left-handed pitchers this season, and his versatility in both the infield and outfield makes him a name who won’t stop buzzing inside Yankees’ circles. Source: Yankees Are Holding Trade Conversations Regarding Willi Castro Back in June, we reported on Empire Sports Media that the Yankees and Twins held offseason trade conversations regarding utilityman Willi Castro. These were not just exploratory conversations; the Yankees’ front office took a liking to Willi Castro and wanted to acquire him as a potential solution to their infield issues. His ability to play multiple positions and hit at a solid level from both sides make him a perfect fit for an offense that has logjams and some handedness imbalance at times. It also gives them the ability to give Anthony Volpe an off-day, which many analysts and fans have pointed out tends to result in better offensive production. While the Yankees could acquire Castro alone, Brian Cashman would love to package prospects together to add some quality relief pitching to this deal. Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax are players of interest for the Yankees, alongside rental veteran Danny Coulombe, who could improve their left-handed pitching depth. Tim Hill has been better as of late, but he’s been overworked in these roles and the Yankees fear of what could happen to their bullpen if they overuse their limited pool of reliable arms. Brian Cashman has already engaged the Twins on talks to try and acquire a bullpen arm, but whether the Twins deal one of their controllable late-inning weapons remains to be seen. People with knowledge of the Twins’ deadline plans have described them as hesitant to deal away these players, and from an outside perspective, neither Duran or Jax are players that will clog up payroll in 2026. The Twins could wait until the offseason or just try and compete next summer, re-tooling right now and continuing to bolster a strong farm system. Players such as Isiah Kiner-Falefa could also be of interest to the Yankees if they whiff in their pursuit of Willi Castro per sources. My educated guess? The Yankees view the Twins as the team they’d like to acquire their infielder and bullpen support from, but view the Pirates as a more than viable pivot option. Isiah Kiner-Falefa and David Bednar carry less trade value than Willi Castro and Jhoan Duran or Griffin Jax, with the latter package coming with a reliever whom has control through 2027 while Bednar is just through 2026. Castro is better than IKF, and Duran is the best reliever available at the deadline, but if New York strikes out on some targets in Minnesota, they target a package deal with the Pirates. Brian Cashman is expected to be aggressive at the deadline according to sources, and the Yankees will try and improve the roster more after adding defensive wizard Ryan McMahon yesterday.
