Pac-12 continues rebuild with new addition

The Pac-12 is trying to resurrect itself from the brink of extinction.

One known as the "Conference of Champions" and the longest-running and most historic of all the Power Five conferences, the Pac-12 was decimated by the act of aggressive expansion by the Big Ten, SEC and then, ultimately, the Big 12.

All that was left from the great exodus before the 2024 season was Washington State and Oregon State, but the conference is doing what it can to build back.

As such, the Pac-12 is announcing its newest member: Texas State

“We are extremely excited to welcome Texas State as a foundational member of the new Pac-12,” commissioner Teresa Gould said in a statement (h/t On3). “It is a new day in college sports and the most opportune time to launch a new league that is positioned to succeed in today’s landscape with student-athletes in mind."

After being whittled down to two, the new Pac-12 turned its sights on the Mountain West and cobbled together an intriguing lineup of Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, San Diego State and Utah State to form the "new Pac-12".

With the "survivors" of Washington State and Oregon State staying put, that gave the Pac-12 seven member schools. A conference has to have eight schools to qualify as an FBS conference, though, so Texas State coming aboard is a big addition.

"Texas State has shown a commitment to competing and winning at the highest level as well as to providing student-athletes with a well-rounded college experience academically, athletically and socially," Gould said. "We look forward to seeing the Bobcats’ future trajectory continue to shine big and bright.”

Located in San Marcos, Texas, Texas State has been part of the Sun Belt since 2013, although its first season with a college football team was played in the WAC.

The Bobcats have an overall win-loss record in football of 56-102 since 2012, though they went 8-5 over the past two seasons with wins in the First Responder Bowl in both 2023 and 2024.
