Russell Wilson was so bad in his New York Giants debut that calls were immediately being made for his benching in favor of first-round rookie Jaxson Dart. That is not happening for their Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys, and according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, they are not in a hurry to make that change anytime soon.
According to Schefter, Giants sources have indicated that while a quarterback change could happen soon, the Giants would prefer not to go with that path. Mostly because they want Dart to get an opportunity to properly develop and prepare. The injury to top offensive lineman Andrew Thomas is also playing a role in that decision, according to Schefter.
The Giants completely overhauled their quarterback room this offseason, bringing in veterans Wilson and Jameis Winston and then selecting Dart at the end of the first round. The plan all along was for Wilson to be a short-term stopgap before turning the position over to Dart in the future.
The Giants just hoped that the future would be next season and not necessarily Week 2 of the 2025 season.
Or any point early in the season.
It still feels like a big start for Wilson and his career. Given the way he finished the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, his past eight starts in the NFL have produced subpar results for both him and his teams. If that continues, the Giants might be forced into a change they may not be ready to make.
It is not just the fact that Wilson and the Giants offense looked so bad in Week 1 that fans are calling for a change. It is also the fact that Dart looked outstanding in the preseason as both a passer and a runner.
Dart completed 32-of-47 passes for 372 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing 52 yards and a touchdown. Preseason stats always need to be taken with a grain of salt, given that the level of competition and game-planning is far from the same as what you get in the regular season, but he was by far the most efficient passer the Giants had.
