The Golden State Warriors desperately needed a win on Monday night, but they would certainly want that game back.
Draymond Green and HC Steve Kerr got into a heated argument on the sidelines, and the former Defensive Player of the Year chose to leave the bench with 20 minutes left to play. Following the win, Green admitted that things would've probably gotten out of hand if he hadn't left his seat.
"Tempers spilled over, and I thought it was best that I get out of there," Green said, per ESPN. "I don't think it was a situation where it was going to get better. It was best to remove myself."
Notably, this was the second time in as many games that the Warriors had to be without Green, who was ejected in the loss to the Phoenix Suns on Saturday. His impact has always gone beyond the stat sheet, but that's a two-way street, and his coach wanted to remind him of that.
"We need Draymond," Kerr said. "He's a champion. We've been together for a long time. It's unfortunate what happened, but it happened."
Even so, as much as the team may need him on the court, Kerr is still his boss, and there's a chain of command that needs to be respected.
"No," Kerr said. "He wasn't going back in. No. He left. He went back to the locker room. We moved forward, and the guys played great."
Green has gotten away with way too much, but the fact of the matter is that his production just doesn't match the antics. He drove Kevin Durant away, cost them Jordan Poole and the Warriors chose him over Klay Thompson. Now, he's beefing with the one person who believed in him and kept him on the starting lineup even when David Lee came back from an injury.
His many detractors have been waiting for his downfall for a very long time, and it seems like that moment has finally arrived. Green is costing the Warriors way more than he's giving them, and with the trade deadline looming large and Steph Curry needing some help, this may have sealed his fate in the Bay Area.
