Where do the Red Sox go after losing Alex Bregman?

Heading into the 2026 MLB offseason, the Boston Red Sox were in a great place; the club had finally made it to the playoffs after a three-year hiatus, and all signs pointed to a busy offseason, with the priority of bringing back Alex Bregman on a long-term deal. However, Boston's efforts were officially thwarted late Saturday night, with the announcement of Bregman to the Cubs.

News of Bregman's departure drew the ire of Red Sox Nation, as Boston is now out on both Bregman and their former franchise cornerstone, Rafael Devers, who were traded due to the fallout from Bregman's arrival. In addition to their anger, fans were also left grappling with one question: Where do the Red Sox go from here?

Examining the Red Sox's options after losing Alex Bregman

One option for Boston is Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado, who was a subject of trade rumors with the Red Sox last season, was open to making the move. Despite this, Boston may look to move on, as, in addition to Arenado's declining production, he turns 35 this April and the Red Sox notoriously do not like to spend on aging contracts.

The next logical option is former Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. While Bichette is poor defensively, he is open to moving to second base, which would offset some of his deficiencies. Furthermore, Bichette's offensive output would more than make up for his defensive woes, as his swing would be perfect for Fenway Park.

Of course, while Bichette would be a perfect fit for the Red Sox, questions remain about whether the front office is willing to offer a lucrative, long-term deal to the former All-Star. Despite any potential roadblocks, some within the Red Sox organization actually preferred Bichette to Bregman, which could lend credence to a possible deal.

Regardless of where the Red Sox go, it should be a very intriguing next few weeks for Craig Breslow and Boston's brass.
