In this week's Associated Press Top 25 men's college basketball poll, released on Monday, one team makes history at the top of the rankings, while another program continues its magical season. Here are five takeaways from the poll.
The Wildcats (18-0) received all 61 first-place votes, making them a unanimous No. 1 for the first time in program history. Arizona has not faced the top teams in the Big 12 yet, but it already has five ranked wins to its credit.
Youth and experience have both been on display for the Wildcats with freshmen Koa Peat (14.7 PPG) and Brayden Burries (14.3 PPG) leading the scoring, along with senior Jaden Bradley (14.1 PPG). Arizona has only trailed for 11:57 in conference play, and those three are a big reason why.
The Cyclones (16-2) fall seven spots to No. 9 after becoming the first team in Big 12 history to start 15-0 or better before losing consecutive games to unranked opponents. In each of Iowa State's losses, it has faced double-digit deficits in each one, something it must clean up to get its season back on track.
The Tar Heels (14-4) drop eight spots to No. 22 after getting swept during their west coast trip. North Carolina lost 95-90 to Stanford and fell 84-78 to California, allowing both teams to shoot at least 50% from the floor.
The Red Raiders (14-4) move up three spots to No. 12 after picking up an 84-71 win over then-No. 11 BYU on Saturday. Junior forward JT Toppin (27 points, 12 rebounds) had his seventh straight double-double in the win. Not only is that the longest active double-double streak in the country, but his 43 career double-doubles only trail Michigan's Yaxel Lendeborg (48) among active players.
The Tigers (16-3) climb four spots to No. 18 after quietly posting their second-best start to ACC play (6-0) since joining the conference. Clemson has won nine straight and two of its three losses have come against ranked Alabama and BYU teams. As one of only two unbeatens in the ACC (Duke), Clemson is worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
The Commodores (16-2) fall five spots to No. 15 after suffering their first two losses of the season consecutively. Vanderbilt gave up 80 points to Texas and followed that up by allowing 94 points in a loss to No. 19 Florida on Saturday. The Commodores struggled immensely on the glass in both games, something they must work on if they are going to bounce back.
The Cardinals (13-5), down three spots to No. 23, put together their fifth 100-point game of the season in Saturday's 100-59 win over Pittsburgh. However, Louisville had lost three of four coming into that game, including its continued struggles without freshman Mikel Brown Jr. in a 79-70 loss to then-No. 16 Virginia.
After some more magic from the RedHawks (19-0) in Saturday's overtime thriller against Buffalo, Miami (Ohio) enters the poll at No. 25, marking its first AP poll ranking since 1998-99.
The RedHawks remain the best story in the sport as one of three unbeatens (Arizona, Nebraska), and are currently tied for the second-longest single-season win streak in MAC history. Miami (Ohio) will likely have to win its conference to get in the NCAA Tournament, but it certainly looks more than capable.
