Happy 36th birthday to 2011 Heisman Trophy winner, 2012 second-overall NFL Draft pick and AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, Robert Griffin III!
Washington drafted RGIII as their apparent quarterback of the future after his Heisman season at Baylor, and as a rookie he seemed to be blossoming into a star. He went 9-6 as a rookie starting QB, throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns with just five interceptions while adding another 815 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. The rushing total is still the eighth-most all-time in a season for a quarterback and was a rookie record until another Washington QB in Jayden Daniels racked up 981 in 2024-25.
Unfortunately for RGIII, his rookie season ended with a brutal knee injury in the playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks, and that would be the theme of the remainder of his career. After making 15 starts as a rookie, Griffin would make just 27 more starts before retiring after the 2020 season.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the NFL players to be named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year since 1997 can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
