Kevin Durant got away with his most brutal mistake in Tuesday's season-opener. But his other miscues were enough to help the Houston Rockets lose a double-OT game to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 125-124.
With 2.2 seconds left in the first overtime, Tari Eason blocked a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shot and Durant grabbed the rebound. He then signaled for a timeout — one that the Rockets didn't have, since they took their final one two possessions earlier. A horrified Alperen Sengun grabbed KD and the referees didn't notice as time expired.
In the 1993 NCAA final, Chris Webber called a timeout his Michigan team didn't have, giving North Carolina two foul shots, the ball and an NCAA title. If the officials have seen and granted Durant's timeout, it would have been a technical foul, giving the Thunder a chance at game-winning free throws — and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a 86.2% percent foul shooter.
Both Durant and Webber are former Golden State Warriors, but at least Webber didn't commit his gaffe in front of a crowd that's been booing him nonstop for nine years. The Thunder fans who never forgave Durant for leaving would have been thrilled to see him blow a game with a mistake you should never see from a player in his 19th NBA season.

Durant avoided the goat's horns at the end of the first overtime, but he made two other huge mistakes. With 9.5 seconds left in regulation, he missed one of two free throws, leaving the Rockets up by two points and allowing SGA to tie the game with a mid-range jumper.

It's hard for anyone to top Gilgeous-Alexander, but he was clearly tiring in the second OT. He shot 1-of-3 and only 3-of-6 from the foul line, so when he got the ball down one point in the final seconds, the Rockets' main priority was not to foul the reigning MVP — especially not 20 feet from the hoop.
Durant couldn't help himself, getting faked out by SGA and fouling out in the process. Gilgeous-Alexander sank both free throws, and the Thunder pulled out the win with Durant watching from the bench.

The only thing Thunder fans wanted to see more than an opening night victory was an opening night victory where Durant was the biggest loser. They got their wish Tuesday.
